Frederic August Frost died in 1873 at age 47, when his oldest son was just 19 years old.

The passenger List for the ship Anna Delius. Left Hamburg, Germany, arrived in New York on 27 October 1864. Shows the following passengers from Sweden:

Johan August Frost & Hilma Lager

Johan August Frost, son of Fredric August Frost and Johanna Nilsdottir was born on 26 Aug 1854 in Morlunda Parish, Kalmar County, Sweden. He died about 1929 in Minnesota, USA.

Hilma Carolina Lager, daughter of Johan Peter Lager and Maja Greta Svensdotter, was born on 22 Jun 1866 in Lönsås parish, Östergötland, Sweden. She died on 29 Mar 1947.

Johan Frost, also known as John Frost or J.A. Frost, came with his parents to the US from Sweden in 1864, at the age of 10. They lived in Illinois until 1869, then moved to Salemsborg, Kansas.

He was a Lutheran Minister. From 1901 to 1917 he served at the Swedish Evangelical Lutheran Church in the Merriam Park neighborhood of St. Paul, Minnesota. From 1918 to 1923 he was pastor at Grace Lutheran Church in Mora, Minnesota. I've read that at Grace Lutheran Church, the largest chancel window is a memorial to Pastor Frost given by Mrs. Frost and Alice.

Rev. Frost also served at Emmanuel Church, on Matilda & Hatch in St. Paul, and Atwater Church in the Wilmar District.

The church in St. Paul today is called Zion Lutheran Church, and they list their history on their website

March 11, 1890 - church organized as "Swedish Evangelical Lutheran Church of Merriam Park."

1900 - A small chapel built at Thomas and Fairview

1901 - Rev. Frost came to the church, and was called as full-time pastor in 1902.

1911 - 1921 the present church was built. The name of the congregation was changed to "Swedish Evangelical Lutheran Church." Membership was 225 adults and 100 children.

1917 - Pastor Frost resigned, and was replaced by Rev. J.E. Linner.

Hilma's obituary:

Moritz Deutsch & Therese Kohn

Moritz Deutsch may also be listed as Morris Deutsch or Markus Deutsch. In official records he is often written as “Dr. Markus recte Moritz Deutsch”.  "Recte" is probably best understood by translating as "Really". It's implying that he went by Markus, but his official name was Moritz.

Moritz Deutsch and Therese Kohn married (probably in Austria) and had the following children:

  • Siegfried Deutsch
There are several men from Vienna who are named Siegfried Deutsch, who were killed in the Holocaust. One of them may be our Siegfried. The one born on March 4 1883 is the closest in age to the other siblings, but he would be quite a bit older. It's also possible that he survived but was separated from his family.

  • Henrietta Deutsch.
There is a Henriette Deutsch born June 5, 1881 who was taken from Vienna and died in the holocaust at Maly Trostenets. Again, she would have been a lot older than Mathilde and Stefan, but could have been a sister to Siegfried.

According to the Database, Stefan Deutsch was born on November 3, 1894 in Vienna. During the war he was living at Wien 4, Graf Starhemberg Gasse 37. He was taken to Auschwitz on July 17, 1942 and was eventually killed.

It appears that a religious shift may have been happening in the family, for Mathilda is listed in the record books of the Jewish community in Vienna, yet she also has a baptism certificate from the Catholic church. Her husband would be Christian.

Hermann Niederweiser & Mathilde Deutsch

Hermann Franz Josef Paul Niederweiser son of Paul Johann Niederwieser and Anna Müller was born on 02 Sep 1884 in Sillian, Lienz, Tirol, Austria.

Mathilde Franziska Doris Deutsch, daughter of  Moritz Deutsch and Therese Kohn, was born on 02 Aug 1890 in Vienna, Wien, Vienna, Austria. She died on 30 Aug 1969 in Bad Reichenhall, Berchtesgadener Land, Bavaria, Germany.

Mathilde also was known as Matilda.

Hermann was an orphan.

Hermann and Mathilde emigrated together to the United States.

From Ancestry.com immigration records:

Hermann Niederweiser, 24, Merchant, listed as "Non Immigrant Alien"
With wife Minnie, 18
Father's address: 1 Wipplengrasse 20 Vienna

Old photo of the Mauretania

When WWI broke out Hermann was taken to an internment camp because he was a German national. His wife and daughter were in Austria at the time visiting relatives. They never were able to find out what happened to him. In 1918 there was a severe flu epidemic in the United States, so the family always assumed he probably died in the internment camp. However, prisoners received good medical treatment and not many died of the flu. (46 Internees at Fort Oglethorpe died.)

Internments of Germans started in May 1917. Locations were Fort McPherson, Georgia, Fort Oglethorpe, Georgia, and Fort Douglas, Utah (they have a list and he's not on it). For a short while was one at Hot Springs, North Carolina. In 1918 things started getting a bit hysterical with mass arrests. Final arrests were in February 1919. Camps finally closed in May 1920. Fort Oglethorpe had the most prisoners.

Hermann and Mathilde were married on 02 Feb 1909 in Vienna, Wien, Vienna, Austria. They had one child:

  • Dorothea Anna Niederweiser was born on 19 Feb 1910 in Milwaukee, Milwaukee, Wisconsin, USA. She died on 17 Dec 2003 in Cary, Wake, North Carolina, USA.

Viby Church in Sweden. The current building dates to 1777, but the tower is even older.
Since their marriage is in the records of Viby parish for 1825,
this is likely to be the church where Sven and Maja were married.
